Declarative Sentence | A sentence that states something |
Imperative Sentence | A sentence that states a command |
Interrogative Sentence | A sentence that asks a question and always ends in a question mark |
Exclamatory Sentence | A sentence that exclaims something and always ends in an exclamation mark |
Blank Verse | Has rhythm but no rhyme |
Couplet | Two lines that rhyme on the same meter |
Free Verse | No rhyme or rhythm |
Haiku | A poem with 3 lines and a total of seventeen syllables with 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line, and 5 syllables on the third line |
Iambic Pentameter | A meter in poetry consisting of 10 syllables divided into five feet (A foot has two syllables) |
Limerick | A humorous poem consisting of a rhyme scheme of aabba |
Lyric | A poem that explores feelings or emotions |
Meter | Rhythm established in a poem |
Narrative | A story in the form of poetry |
Quatrain | A stanza of four lines usually having alternate rhymes |
Refrain | A repeated part of a poem |
Rhyme | Having an end sound that corresponds to another |
Rhythm | A strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound of syllables |
Repetition | (Doing something more than once) The action of repeating something that has already been said or written |
Sonnet | A poem of fourteen lines using any number of formal rhyme schemes, typically having ten syllables per line |

Stress | Emphasis that falls on certain syllables and not others |

Flashback | An event set in a time earlier than the main story |
Plot | The main storyline |
Foreshadowing | A warning or indication of a future event |
Conflict | A disagreement or fight between someone or something |
Antagonist | An opposing force that gets in the way of the main character |
Rising Action | The events in a story that lead to the point of greatest interest |
Climax | The greatest point of interest in a story |
Theme | The topic of a story |
Point of View | The position from which something is observed or told |
