Unit 2: Fusion

sediment Tiny grains of broken down rock.
erosion The process by which sediment and other materials are moved from one place to another
deposition The process by which eroded material is dropped.
gradient The measure of the change in elevation over a certain distance.
load Materials carried by a stream.
discharge The amount of water that a stream carries in a given amount of time.
channel The path a stream follows.
floodplain Layers of deposited sediment that form flat areas.
meander The curves and bends that form a twisting, looping pattern in a stream channel.
delta A stream's deposit that forms a fan-shaped pattern.
alluvial fan The fan-shaped deposit that forms on dry land.
groundwater The water located within the rocks below Earth's surface.
shoreline The place where land and a body of water meet.
abrasion The grinding and wearing down of rock surfaces by other rock or by sand particles.
deflation The removal of fine sediment by wind.
dunes Mounds of wind-deposited sand.
loess Extremely fine material that creates thick deposits of sediment.
glacier Large mass of moving ice that forms by the compacting of snow.
glacial drift The general term for all of the materials carried and deposited by a glacier.
creep The extremely slow movement of material downslope.
rockfall Occurs when loose rock falls down a steep slope.
landslide The sudden and rapid movement of a large amount of material downslope.
mudflow A rapid movement of a large mass of mud.
