Chapter 2

Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Volume The amount of space taken up by an object.
Miniscus The curve at the surface of a liquid (the level of liquid you measure in a graduated cylinder).
Cubic Centimeters How volume of a solid object is measured.
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Weight The measure of gravitational force exerted on an object.
Inertia The tendency of an object to resist change in motion.
Physical Property A property of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the matter's identity (thermal conductivity, state, density, solubility, ductility and malleability.
Physical Change A change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance (ie: melting, freezing, condensation)(making a lump of silver into a silver bracelet).
Density The amount of matter in a given space (Mass/Volume).
Chemical Properties Property of matter that is based on the ability to change into a new substance that has different properties (flammability).
Reactivity The ability of two or more substances to combine and form one or more new substances.
Chemical Change When one or more substances are changed into new substances that have new and different properties (ie: rusting, change of color, change of odor, production of heat, fizzing and foaming, making sounds or light).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
