# Chap 9 Vocabulary

Term | Definition |

Distributive Property | To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend of the sum by the number outside the parentheses. |

Commutative Property | The order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product. |

Associative Property | The way in which numbers are grouped when added or multiplied does not change the sum or product. |

Additive Identity | The sum of any number and 0 is the number. |

Multiplicative Identity | The product of any number and 1 is the number. |

Inverse Operations | Operations which undo each other. For example, addition and subtraction are inverse operations. |

Subtraction Property of Equality | If you subtract the same number from each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal. |

Addition Property of Equality | If you add the same number to each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal. |

Coefficient | The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable. |

Two-Step Equations | An equation that has two different operations in in it. |

Function | A relation in which each element of the input is paired with exactly one element of the output according to a specified rule. |

Function Table | A table organizing the input, rule, and output of a function. |

Function Rule | An expression which describes the relationship between each input and output. |
