BMMS Science Ch 1 - Intro to Earth Science

Science | a way of learning about the natural world |
Observing | using one or more of your senses to gather information |
Inferring | explaining or interpreting things that you observe |
Predicting | making a forecast of what will happen in the future based upon past experience or evidence |
Scientific Inquiry | asking questions about what you observe |
Hypothesis | possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question |
Variable | one of the factors that can change in an experiment |
Data | facts and figures and other evidence gathered through observations |
Energy | ability to do work, or cause change |
Atmosphere | mixture of gases that surrounds the planet |
Hydrosphere | Earth’s oceans, lakes, rivers and ice |
Lithosphere | Earth’s solid, rocky outer layer |
Biosphere | all living things |
Matter | makes up everything in the universe |
Wave | the up and down, and back and forth, motion that carries energy from place to place |
Heat | thermal energy transferred from one object to another |
Thermal energy | total energy of all the atoms that make up an object |
Earth Science | term for the body of knowledge about Earth and the forces that change our planet |
Topography | the shape of the land |
Elevation | height above sea level |
Relief | difference in elevation between the highest and lowest parts of an area |
Plain | nearly flat, or gently rolling land with low relief |
Mountain | landform with high elevation and high relief |
Plateau | landform with high elevation and a more or less level surface |
Map | flat model of all or part of Earth’s surface as seen from above |
Scale | relates distance on a map to a distance on Earth’s surface |
Latitude | distance in degrees north or south of the equator |
Longitude | distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian |
Topographic map | shows the surface features of an area |
Contour line | connects points of equal elevation |
Contour interval | change in elevation from contour line to contour line |
Index Contour | labeled with the elevation in round units, usually the 5th contour line, is darker and heavier |
