Fitness Terminology

Weight Room Vocabulary

Repetitions (reps) How many times you do an exercise.
Sets A group of repetitions
Interval A workout in which exercise and recovery are mixed.
Recovery Resting between workouts or exercises
Overload Working hard enough to improve fitness
Progression Gradually increasing intensity and amount of work.
Warm-up Easy, low-impact activities to ease body into more intense activities
Cool-down Easy low-impact activities after exercise to prevent soreness, and return body to recovery state.
Lifetime sports Activities that you can do throughout life, requiring little equipment or few or no other players. Examples: Cycling, Swimming dancing, skiing, basketball, and hiking
