MUSCLES: ACTIONS AND MOVEMENTS

abductor A muscle that moves a part away from the midline or midsagittal plane of the body (raising your arm away from the body)
adductor A muscle that moves a part towards the midline or midsagittal plane of the body (lowering your arm back against the body)
levator a muscle that rasies a body part
depressor a muscle that lowers a body part
flexor a muscle that bends a limb at a joint
extensor a muscle that straightens (stretches out) a limb or joint
supinator a muscle that produces the motion of supination (e.g. turning the palm and forearm upward)
pronator a muscle that produced motion of pronation (e.g. turning the palm and forearm downward)
evertor a muscle that turns a body part outward
invertor a muscle that turns a body part inward
rotator a muscle that rotates or revolves a body part on its axis
elevation the act of raising or lifting up a body part
buccinator muscle of the cheek used to compress the cheek as occurs in whistling and blowing; the trumpeter muscle
masseter the principle chewing muscle
risorius muscle that draws the angle or corner of the mouth outward and upward; the laughing muscle
