Chapter 5 Vocab.

TermDefinition
Periodic Table An arrangement of elements in columns, based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row.
Period Is each row in the table of elements that goes horizontal.
Group Is each column on the periodic table.
Periodic Law Is the pattern of repeating properties on the periodic table.
Atomic Mass Unit (amu) Is defined as one-twelfth the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
Metals Are elements that are good conductors of electric current and heat.
Nonmetals Are elements that are poor conductors of heat and electric current.
Metalloids Are elements with properties that fall between those of metals and nonmetals.
Transition Metals Are elements that form a bridge between the elements on the left and elements on the right side of the table.
Valence Electron Is an electron that is in the highest occupied energy level of an atom.
Alkali Metals Are the elements in Group 1A that have a single valence electron and are extremely reactive.
Halogens Are the elements in Group 7A that have seven valence electrons.
Noble Gases Are the elements in Group 8A that are oderless and colorless.
Alkaline Earth Metals Are the elements in Group 2A that have 2 valence electrons and are harder than the metals in Group 1A.
