Artefact a man-made object
Carbon dating a method used by archaeologists to find out about the past
Primary source a source made or written at the time the event took place
Secondary source a second hand source, written or made by someone who was not a witness to the event
Pre-history this is the period in history before written records were kept
Rescue/salvage archaeology when archaeologists carry out an emergency dig on a site that is in danger of being destroyed
Census a survey of population numbers in a country at a particular time
Museum a place where artefacts from the past are kept
Archive a place where documents from the past are stored
