Characteristic property a quality of a substance that never changes and can be used to identify the substance
Boiling point The temp. at which a substance can be changed from a liquid to a gas
Melting point The temp. at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
Physical change A change in a substance that does not change its identity
Chemical change A change in which one or more substances combine or break apart to form a new substance
Mixture two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined
Solution A very well-mixed mixture
element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.
Compound A substance made of 2 or more elements chemically combined
Pure substance A substance made of only 1 kind of matter and having definite properties
Weight A measure of the force of gravity on an object
Mass A measure of how much matter is in an object
Volume The amount of space that matter occupies
Density The measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume
International system of units The system of units used by scientists to measure the property of matter
