Mr. Tuttle Science Chapter 12 Vocabulary

atom (E6) the smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element.
electron (E7) a particle in an atom that has a negative charge
element (E6) a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
molecule (E10) two or more atoms joined by chemical bond
neutron (E8) a particle in the nucleus of an atom that has no charge
nucleus (A8, E7) storehouse of the cell's most important chemical information or the central core of an atom
proton (E8) a particle in the nucleus of an atom that has a positive charge
chemical symbol (E16) a letter or letters that abbreviates an element's name
metal (E17) any one of the elements located on the left and bottom of the periodic table, which are usually shiny, can be bent or stretched, and conduct electricity
noble gas (E20) any one of the elements located in the far right column of the periodic table, which generally do not combine with other elements to form molecules
nonmetal (E17) elements that are usually dull, brittle, and do not conduct electricity
Periodic Table (E15) a table that organizes the elements by their properties
semimetal (E17) elements that has some properties of metals and some properties of nonmetels
chemical formula (E29) a shorthand way to describe the chemical makeup of a compound
chemical reaction (E28, E53) a process in which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances, or a specific example of one or more chemical changes
compound (E26) a substance that is made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined
