chapter 25 terms

Citizen A person who formally owes allegiance to a government. In return, he or she gains rights and responsibilities that are protected by the laws of the government.
Register When a citizen shows documents to prove that he or she has the right to vote in elections and fills out required forms.
Legislatures Law-making governmental bodies.
Ordinances Local laws or regulations.
Misdemeanor A less serious crime that may be punished by a fine or short prison term of less than a year.
Violations Acts that violate or break a local ordinance and can result in a fine or short jail term.
Contract A mutual agreement between two consenting people.
Tort A wrongful act committed against another person.
Defamation Spreading lies that harm another person.
Slander Verbally spreading lies that harm another person.
Libel Writing false information about another person with the intention of causing him or her harm.
Battery A use of force resulting in physical contact with a person that the indivdual did not permit.
Assault A threat to cause physical harm to a person.
Negligence Harming someone without intent.
Jury A group of citizens who are selected by the court system to determine the outcome of a trial.
Plaintiff The person filing a lawsuit and taking a case to court.
Defendant A person accused of wrongdoing.
Public defender A lawyer appointed by the state for a defendant in a criminal case who cannot afford a lawyer.
Mentor A person to look to for guidance and encouragement.
