Vocab for Chapter 4

TermDefinition
multiple alleles Are three or more genes that code for a single trait.
sex chromosomes Are one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes in each body cell.
sex-liked genes Are genes on the X and Y chromosomes.
carrier Is a person who has one recessive allele for a trait and one dominant allele.
genetic disorder Is an abnormal condition that a person inherits through genes or chromosomes.
pedigree Is a chart or "family tree" that tracks which members of a family have a particular trait.
karyotype Is a picture of all the chromosomes in a cell.
selective breeding Is the process of selecting organisms with a desired traits to be parents of the next generation.
inbreeding Is the technique that involves crossing two individuals that have similar characteristics.
hybridization Is when breeders cross two genetically different individuals.
clone Is an organism that has exactly the same genes as the organism form which it was produced from.
genetic engineering Is the process when genes from one organism are transferred into the DNA of another organism.
gene therapy This is the process that involves inserting copies of a gene directly into a person's cells.
genome Is all the DNA in one cell of an organism.
