Literary Elements

QuestionAnswer
Atmosphere or mood The feeling created in the reader by an author's use of literary devices in a literary work or passage
Conflict The battle between two opposing forces that moves the story along
Internal conflict A conflict that occurs inside the character
External conflict A conflict that occurs outside the character
Plot The sequence of events in which each event results from a previous one and causes the next
Protagonist The main character in the story
Antagonist The character who opposes the main character
Science fiction A genre that combines elements of fiction and fantasy with scientific fact
Fantasy A genre that is highly imaginative and contains elements not found in real life such as fairies and wizards
Folk tales Stories that are composed orally and passed down from person to person by word of mouth
nonfiction Prose writing that tells about real events and real people
fiction Prose writing that tells about imaginary characters and events
Climax The high point of the action in a story; the turning point
rising action The events that lead up to the climax and cause the conflict to grow worse
falling action the events that come after the climax in the story
resolution the event(s) that round out and tie up the loose ends in a story
setting the time and place of the action
theme the central message or moral of a story that is universal in nature
Character" A person or animal that takes part in the action of a literary work
point of view the perspective from which a story is told
first person POV it is when the person uses the pronoun "I"
third person POV it is when the person uses he, she, they, etc.
historical fiction A genre that blends real life setting and events with imaginary characters
realistic fiction a genre that concerns events and characters that are true to real life
