Chapter 4 Energy

chapter 4 energy notes

QuestionAnswer
What is energy? abilty to cause change
What is potential energy? stored energy due to position
What is kinetic energy? energy a moving object has because of its motion
What is elastic potential energy? stored energy by something that can strech or compress
What is chemical potential energy? energy stored in chemical bonds
What is gravitational potential energy? stored energy by objects due to their postion above earths surface GPE= mgh (m= mass; g=acceleration of gravity always 9.8 on earth; h= height)
What is mechanical energy? total amount to kinetic and potential energy ME= GPE + KE
What is the law of conservation of energy? energy can not be created or destroyed
What is the formula for kinetic energy? KE= 1/2 mv² (m= mass;v= speed)(answer is in J or joules)
What are the different forms of energy? (and examples) electrical: electrical appliances chemical: food, batteries, gasoline thermal: heat radiant/electromagnetic: sun, light, killer microwaves, doesn't need a medium mechanical: moving something sound: vibration in a medium nuclear: fission and fusion
What are the energy transformations of jumping on a trampoline? potential to kinetic
What are the energy transformations of ringing to doorbell? mechanical to electrical to sound
What are the energy transformations of eating food then walking? chemical to kinetic
What are the energy transformations of batteries powering a flashlight? chemical to electrical to electromagnetic
What is nuclear fission? atom nucleus splits

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
