law of conservation of mass The law implies that mass can neither be created nor destroyed.states that the mass of an isolated system (closed to all matter and energy) will remain constant over time.
physical change Physical changes are changes affecting the form of a chemical substance
chemical change Chemical changes occur when a substance combines with another to form a new substance
element one of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.
chemical formula a way of expressing information about the atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound.
element molecule the smallest particle in a chemical element or compound that has the chemical properties of that element or compound.
compound molecule a compound made of 2 or more nonmetal elements
chemical equation A symbolic representation of what happens when chemicals come in contact with one another.
chemical reaction A process in which one or more substances (reactants) are chemically changed into one or more new substances
reactants A substance participating in a chemical reaction, especially a directly reacting substance present at the initiation of the reaction.
products A substance resulting from a chemical reaction.
coefficent numerical measure of a physical or chemical property that is constant for a system under specified conditions
